Philippe / Attal / political inheritance
After Macron, what survives?
The individual must leave. A governing language, institutional habits and competing claims to competence do not necessarily leave with him.
Past governing responsibility
Current campaign commitments
Precisely what would change?
Parliament, budgets, Europe
A constitutional ending, not an ideological one
Article 6 prohibits more than two consecutive presidential terms. Emmanuel Macron therefore cannot seek a third consecutive term in 2027. Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal have both served as his prime minister, but they lead distinct political efforts and make distinct claims to the inheritance. Constitution of 4 October 1958Wikipedia
Philippe served as prime minister from 2017 to 2020; Attal held the office in 2024. Those offices are evidence of governing responsibility, not proof that either shares every decision of the entire Macron presidency. Continuity must be documented policy by policy. Competence is an argument, not a neutral credential
Philippe’s campaign organizes its priorities around a France that is safer, more attentive to its children, more prosperous and more conquering. Attal foregrounds education, work and wages, borders, artificial intelligence, state debt and ecological debt. These are campaign categories, not demonstrated results. Édouard PhilippeGabriel Attal
Calling a proposal “reform” makes change sound purposeful; calling its author “competent” makes disagreement risk looking like ignorance. A critical reading asks what outcome is promised, whose interests bear the cost and what would count as failure. Expertise matters, but it does not eliminate political choice. The center is also a position
A political center can describe an alliance, an electoral location or a claim to rise above conflict. Those are not interchangeable. Glucksmann’s campaign explicitly calls for a rupture with Macronism, while Attal’s promises ask to be read against his own governing record. Raphaël GlucksmannGabriel Attal
A useful comparison separates taxation and spending, public services, policing and civil liberties, and institutional practice. Two politicians may share a European commitment while disagreeing on redistribution or the exercise of executive power. One left–right coordinate cannot capture that. Raphaël GlucksmannGabriel Attal
Autonomy after the speeches
At Davos in January 2026, Macron argued for European sovereignty, protection and investment against a harsher trade environment. The speech supplies the outgoing president’s own account of his strategy. It does not demonstrate that every instrument worked or that successors endorse it. ÉlyséeConstitution of 4 October 1958
For a successor, strategic autonomy entails capacities: energy, industry, financing, defense and European coalitions. A president cannot produce those capacities by changing the language of national ambition. Parliament, budgets, firms, workers and partner governments remain part of the governing equation.
